I have a very picky dog, so when I find something that Soul really enjoys, I have to share it.
Following yesterday’s topic, this is an ice cream for both dogs and cats. It is made in Finland, and at the moment, unfortunately, is only sold in Finland.
The parent brand “Voihan Vuohi” (focused on dairy products for humans) translates like “Oh boy, a goat!” it’s a clever, playful Finnish pun based on a very common idiom: “Voihan vuosi” or “Voihan poika” both typical Finnish expressions used like “Oh boy!”, “Oh my!” or “Good grief!” when you’re surprised or amazed. By swapping out the last word for “Vuohi” (which means goat), they created a brilliant brand name that translates to something like “Well, would you look at that, a goat!” or “Oh my, goat!” It perfectly captures that so-Nordic humour while telling you exactly what the star ingredient is.
The child brand “Voihan Kuono” translates to something like “Oh, snout!”. It’s a nice way to keep the Finnish brand identity while signaling to pet parents that this line is strictly for their pets.
The pet line brand is known for their artisanal goat’s milk products like freeze-dried goat’s milk drops, and powder supplements as toppers for kibble.
The interesting part is that this is an upcycling product made from dairy industry’s nutrients rich waste whey water that is tossed either with Finnish berries or carrots. It is not only highly digestible, hypoallergenic, and fantastic for cats and dogs with sensitive stomachs but it’s also solving a problem.
Seasonal surplus.
By taking the high-quality, excess goat’s milk that would otherwise have gone to waste and freeze-drying it, they extended its shelf life from a few days to years.
Turning that seasonal, agricultural food surplus into high-value, shelf-stable premium pet treats this is a clear example of upcycling food waste into a functional, premium product. It gives local farmers an ethical way to utilise 100% of their production without anything being dumped down the drain.
I found them in one of the few pet friendly Kesko K-Group supermarkets in Lapland last Easter. But apparently, it’s also available in S-ryhmä / S-Group outlets, and domestic specialty pet stores.
Do you know any other multispecies upcycling premium product for pets?
I’d love to know 🧡
