One of the best perks of a road trip is choosing where and when to stop.
And when you travel with pets, they get to enjoy the stop too.
While crossing Germany, we made a detour to our favourite music shop. Not an ordinary one. It’s actually one of the best business stories I’ve come across in a long time.
They broke almost every “rule” of retail.
Instead of moving to Munich, Berlin, or Frankfurt, they stayed in a tiny village in Bavaria, Treppendorf. Rather than opening many stores, this family business built one enormous destination store and one of the world’s most sophisticated music e-commerce operations.
This is where, over the years, we’ve bought our ukuleles, guitars, and a bass from the coziness of our home in Finland.
And their inspiring business case is one for the books.
In 1996, Thomann became the first music retailer in Germany to launch a website. Way before Google, Paypal and Amazon were even a thing (1998). At a time when most competitors believed no one would buy instruments online, Thomann saw the internet as an opportunity, not a threat.
But technology wasn’t their biggest advantage.
They doubled down on what Amazon still can’t replicate today:
✅ Musicians advising musicians
✅ Massive product selection and stock availability
✅ Customer service kept in-house instead of outsourced
✅ Continuous investment in logistics rather than opening hundreds of stores.
Instead of chasing expansion through new locations, they turned one rural headquarters into a world-class retail, logistics, and customer experience hub.
Retail isn’t won by having the most stores.
It’s won by earning the most TRUST.
Sometimes, the biggest competitive advantage isn’t your location.
It’s having the conviction to do what everyone else thinks won’t work.
And of course. Your dog/s are welcome 🧡
