The recently updated EU pet travel rules are important because they aim to create a more standardised, traceable, and safer system for pet movement across Europe, especially as pet friendly travel demand continues to grow in airlines, ferries, trains and accommodations.
This is what it means in practice:
• Pet identification and documentation
• Max. number of pets allowed per journey (5)
• EU transit and re-entry procedures
Main key dates to follow:
📅 October 2026 – updated animal health certificates apply New EU-standard health certificate models will be required for certain pet movements, especially for travellers entering the EU from non-EU countries. The goal is to improve disease prevention, documentation consistency, and digital traceability. For EU travellers, the process stays similar: microchip + rabies vaccine + official certificate/passport.
📅 January 2028 – updated identification and passport requirements apply This phase modernizes pet identification and EU pet passport systems. Older passport models begin transitioning out, while updated passports and stricter owner residency/documentation rules become fully active. This will especially affect frequent travellers and non-EU residents using EU-issued pet passports.
All this matters because more trust between countries and transport providers will mean a shift towards a pet inclusive Europe with:
→ Easier integration with airlines, rail, ferries, and hotels
→ Better animal welfare oversight
→ Stronger disease control without banning mobility
→ Greater demand in pet inclusive travel
