Pet healthcare is moving towards a human healthcare style ecosystem

One of the clearest signals of this shift is the emergence of veterinary pharmacies.

In Spain, this model is starting to appear in the open.

Recently, two new specialized veterinary medicine dispensing centers opened in Madrid, operated by Medivet & Partners. These locations provide prescription and non-prescription pet medicines, nutritional treatments, antiparasitics, and professional guidance from licensed pharmacists.

Interestingly, these spaces are not entirely new in Spain.

There are already dozens of veterinary pharmacies or pharmacies dispensing veterinary medicines in Barcelona alone, showing that the infrastructure is slowly developing.

But what’s happening in Spain is part of a much larger trend.

Across Europe, veterinary medicines are traditionally dispensed either directly by veterinarians or through regular community pharmacies.

Dedicated “pet pharmacies” remain relatively rare, which is why new specialized locations attract attention.

The US, however, is already far ahead with online pet pharmacies.

Companies like
PetMeds
Chewy Pharmacy
VetDepot

operate nationwide online pharmacies selling prescription and non-prescription pet medications approved by veterinarians.

Even Amazon Pharmacy has entered the space by offering hundreds of prescription pet medications through partnerships with veterinary fulfillment services.

This evolution reveals something deeper.

Veterinary pharmacies are becoming a missing layer of infrastructure in pet healthcare.

They sit between:
→ Vets (who diagnose and prescribe)
→ Pharmaceutical supply chains
→ Pet parents managing treatments at home

But there’s an even more interesting implication, one that is often overlooked.

Vet pharmacies could also become critical infrastructure for pet travel.

Imagine a future where airports host veterinary pharmacies, allowing pet travellers to obtain certified treatments before flights and verify prescriptions digitally across borders.

What appears to be a simple retail concept may actually play a strategic role in enabling global pet mobility 🧡
