The Nordic countries are a Cat-First market

The Nordic pet market is quietly becoming one of Europe’s most premium pet economies

The Nordics may be smaller than Germany, France, or the UK markets. But they are becoming one of Europe’s clearest indicators of where premium pet care is heading next.

According to Nordic pet industry data (2025):

▪️ Cats now outnumber dogs across the region

▪️ Online pet food purchasing continues expanding rapidly

▪️ Subscription and DTC models are gaining traction

▪️ Nordic pet care continues returning toward long-term growth (~4%)

▪️ Premiumisation remains the dominant growth driver

▪️ E-commerce and subscriptions continue expanding

▪️ Functional nutrition and wet food are gaining momentum

Nordic consumers increasingly prioritise quality, health, and convenience.

And cats are the favourite because:

→ Cats fit modern flexible lifestyles

→ Younger consumers prefer lower-maintenance companion animals

→ Cat categories over-index in premium wet food and functional nutrition

The Nordic market is experiencing 2 shifts:

Volume growth → Value growth

Basic ownership → Premium pet parenting

All this matters because Nordic consumers are often early adopters of broader European consumer shifts.

Traditional mass retail is no longer the only growth engine.

And this is where competitors may still be behind:

▪️ Underestimating Nordic willingness to pay for premium pet care

▪️ Treating sustainability as branding instead of product strategy

▪️ Overfocusing on dog-led portfolios

▪️ Missing the rise of Cat-First premium nutrition

▪️ Competing on distribution instead of retention and frequency

Many of the trends Europe is moving toward are already more advanced here, in the Nordic Countries 🧡
