The classic “Dogs vs Cats” debate is officially outdated

The modern question is: Are you a pet parent or not?

This shift toward a universal pet parenthood is a beautiful evolution in how we view companionship these days, and it’s a trend I live and breathe every single day.

In 2025, 65% of U.S. pet owners had two or more pets.

Last week, I attended an APPA American Pet Products Association webinar on the latest US pet industry trends. Since the US leads the sector, these insights offer a great preview of what’s coming next for the European market and everywhere else.

They did cover a lot of data from the preview report. The part they did cover from multi-pet households and multispecies as a trend had most of my attention.

Millennials and Gen Z, especially, are the generations most likely to own multiple pets.

Multi-pet ownership is increasingly evolving into multispecies households (dogs + cats, dogs + rabbits, cats + birds, etc.). Yes, you read that right, cats and birds, I see your eyebrows rising. I’ve seen that trend all over social media as well. And the multispecies as a trend is not unique across North America is also a trend in Europe and parts of Asia.

Key facts:
→ 95 million U.S. households own pets.
→ 71% of U.S. households own at least one pet
→ 63% of pet owners have two or more pets

This is super interesting because it reveals a fascinating industry trend:
Out of every 5 pet owners in the U.S., about 3 of them own multiple pets.

In the U.S., a household is more likely to:
→ Have multiple pets (45%)
→ Have just one pet (26%)
→ No pets at all (29%)

A huge portion of those multi-pet homes aren’t just “two-dog homes” or “two-cat homes,” but combinations of dogs, cats, fish, and birds living under the same roof.

We’ve moved past the old debate of being a “dog person” or a “cat person”. It’s a beautiful cultural shift toward treating animals as true family members, and as a multispecies pet parent myself, it’s a trend I’m incredibly proud to be part of 🧡
