Last weekend, while I was passing by a mall, one supermarket (Kesko Group) caught my attention.
I’d never seen this before: 3 different options for grocery shopping with your dog. But only 2 of the 3, in my opinion, actually count as pet friendly.
I’ve written before about dog parking vs. dog trolleys in Finland, and about 3 supermarkets in Lapland letting dogs in on a leash (check in the comments).
This time I found all 3 approaches, side by side in one place: Mall of Tripla, in Helsinki.
1️⃣ K-Market Pasilan Asema: Dogs welcome.
No trolley, no crate. Just a sign asking owners to keep their dog under control and away from the food shelves. Trust-based, low-friction, works for calm dogs and confident owners. Just as I saw in Lapland.
2️⃣ K-Supermarket Tripla: Dogs welcome, but in a dog trolley.
“Ihmisen parhaan ystävän kärry” (best friend’s cart) lets you shop hands-free while your dog rides along at cart height, away from other customers’ feet and the produce section. For big dogs, though, it is not an option.
3️⃣ Triplan Tassuparkki: Dog parking.
Locked, ventilated boxes with a keypad code, right by the entrance. Probably practical for some owners, I just don’t think a sentient being should ever be treated like a suitcase.
3 formats, 3 risk levels, 3 customer needs solved.
And that’s the part I find genuinely interesting from a marketing lens.
→ Retailers view pet friendliness as a low-cost, high-impact way to build brand loyalty, capturing daily-routine shoppers before competitors do.
→ Allowing dogs removes the barrier for shoppers who would otherwise have to choose between running errands, leaving a pet home alone, or dangerously tying a dog up unsupervised outside.
Pet friendly retail isn’t a trend anymore.
In mature pet markets, accommodating dogs has transitioned from a temporary trend into a consumer expectation. The businesses figuring out which format fits their space and their customer first are the ones building the habit before their competitors do 🧡
