I’ve crossed Finland by train with two cats and a dog many times.
Night trains, day trains, always welcome.

Most countries are nowhere close.

VR, the Finnish railway, lets you book seats in the pet wagon. Your dog, cat, parrot, hamsters, guinea pig, domestic rat, lizard or turtle travelling in their carriers can settle right next to you, and nobody blinks. On the night train, there are private cabins where the whole family sleeps and travels together.

Compare that to most European travel with a pet: half-rules, surprise refusals or a conductor deciding on the spot (in Brussels, I had to travel with Soul in between wagons).

In Finland, the system already assumes you might bring an animal, and it’s built around that. That’s the whole difference between letting pets on board and designing for them.

It also says something quieter about a place. When the infrastructure treats animals as normal family members, the culture usually already does.

I can’t wait to try pet travel using Nox Mobility, HURRAIL!, Trainline, Rail Europe, and see how the next gen of train mobility honestly innovates in this area.
